THERAPY

Individual Therapy

Individual work with a psychologist can be a valuable resource to resolve many different types of problems. This type of experience affords people the opportunity to work in a focused therapeutic environment and can help them to gain insight into their difficulties and to recognize and change problematic patterns of behavior.  Often people find that using individual therapy in conjunction with group therapy can help them to generalize new behaviors to their everyday life more readily.

Currently, individual therapy is available with Dr. Penticuff as well as with either of the postdoctoral residents. As with any type of therapy, potential side effects
that are unexpected can occur. This possibility should be discussed with your therapist.

Group Therapy

Work done in a group setting can be, in many ways, more powerful than individual work. In a safe group setting, individuals can get honest feedback about themselves and identify the patterns in which current behavior occurs and process the impact of such patterns on their relationships with others. Individuals can try out new ideas and behavior within this safe setting in order to facilitate more general changes. We are currently offering several different process-oriented therapy groups for adults. On Monday nights from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., we offer a coed group for adult children of alcoholics (ACOAs). An additional ACOA group for women is offered on Tuesday nights from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Currently, these groups are co-facilitated by Dr. Penticuff and one of the postdoctoral residents. In addition, we offer a couples group on Wednesdays from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. As with any type of therapy, potential side effects
that are unexpected can occur. This possibility should be discussed with your therapist.

Couples Therapy

Sometimes couples find it helpful to be seen in therapy together in order to resolve difficulties that focus on their interactions, rather than on individual behavior. Couples therapy can be very effective in helping couples identify maladaptive behavior patterns that contribute to relational distress. Couples therapy can be done with a single therapist, with two co-therapists, or in a group with other couples. As with any type of therapy, potential side effects
that are unexpected can occur. This possibility should be discussed with your therapist.
